The title of the movie, ‘Bamboo Shoots’, refers to an old saying from Cambodia, where the movie is set. The saying says that bamboo plants are a little bit like children. If you look after them well when they are very young and vulnerable, they will grow up to be strong, and useful. The topic of the film is the very sad plight of some Cambodian people, many of them little children, living on a dump in Phnom Penh, making a pretty miserable living by gathering garbage, sorting it, and recycling it.
Right now, in my neighborhood, it’s spring and the bamboo shoots are being harvested. Old men and ladies are out in the bamboo fields, digging the plump things out of the ground.

Heh, it’s funny to think that I was there when Katy asked you to do this animation for her. It looks really great! I’m quite impressed – you’re a man of versatile skills.
